BMW 5-Series Refuel Advert - Ultimate Driving Machine
As car slogans go, the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine‘ from BMW has probably been one of the most successful slogans in car history. Which made it all the more surprising when they dropped it. Their arguments for changing their marketing direction were sound, but always seemed a bit misguided.
The new Lexus IS - launched at Detroit in January and costing from £26,495 for the IS 250 in the UK – actually offers ownership costs that eclipse diesel offerings from the likes of Jaguar, BMW, Audi and Mercedes, say Lexus. Despite the logical assumption that the complex hybrid powerplant in the IS 300h would cost more to maintain, Lexus say the opposite is true. Because it has no clutch and the starter motor and alternator are integrated they require no servicing or replacement and Lexus has fitted a timing chain instead of a timing belt, so it won’t need regular replacement either.

Wednesday evening saw gala presentation of the 458 Italia to an invited crowd, and Ferrari had every Ferrari-associated face on display, from Michael Schumacher to Piero Ferrari. It’s the usual glad-handing event, but we do get a few glimpses of the 458 in motion, and it’s a curtain raiser for the proper reveal next week at Frankfurt. I’ll take the nice black one near the end of the video.
